Chill in the air persists

CHANDIGARH: The chill in air in the plain areas caused by the heavy snowfall in the upper reaches continued to persist on Sunday, resulting in a dip in mercury at few places in Haryana and Punjab.

However, the Meteorological Department said the cold wave conditions prevailing in parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh would abate by Tuesday.

As cold condition persisted in most parts of Punjab, Ludhiana turned out to be the coldest place in the State recording a low of 5.3 degrees Celsius, three below normal range.

Patiala also had a cold night at 6.7 C, down three while Amritsar recorded a low of 7.3 C.

The minimum at Chandigarh settled at 8 C, down one degree.

Police officials transferred

RANCHI: The Jharkhand Government has transferred 32 police officials, including the superintendents of police of two districts.

According to notification of the Home Department on Saturday evening Naveen Kumar Singh has been made the SP of Chatra district and Kandaswami would be the new SP of Koderma district.

The rest 30 to be transferred include 26 belonging to the State police services.

One killed in road accident

LUDHIANA: One person was killed and another injured in a head-on collision between a car and a truck on Ludhiana-Chandigarh road on Sunday.

Raghubir Singh, working as Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO), died when the truck coming from the opposite direction hit the car in which they were travelling at Mundian village near here, police said.

The injured, V P Singh, has been hospitalised, they said.

Vaishnovdevi pilgrim injured

JAMMU: A pilgrim to the Mata Vaishnovdei temple was injured in a landslide en route the holy cave shrine of Shiv Khori in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir early on Sunday. After performing darshan at the Vaishnovdevi shrine, Jitender Kumar of Agra was on his way to Shiv Khori in Reasi teshil of Udhampur district, when he was wounded in a landslide, official sources said.

He was shifted to a hospital, where he is undergoing treatment, they said adding that rock sliding and landslides are taking place en route the shrine due to heavy rains.

Five killed in road mishap

GUMLA: Five persons, including two children, were killed and about a dozen others injured when a bauxite laden truck overturned between Ghagra and Devaki in Jharkhand's Gumla district on Sunday.

The mishap occurred when the driver lost control over the truck, heading towards Ghagra from Devaki, at a turn near a road bridge, police said.

The two children and a woman were killed on the spot. While one person succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital another died later at the hospital, the police said.
