Comeback win by Talwar

MUMBAI: Chandigarh's Sumit Talwar, staring down the barrel at 0-4 against Gujarat's Gunjal Patel, won the next five racks in a row for a 5-4 verdict in the Group E league, booking a place in the knockout phase of the ONGC-Khar Gymkhana National 8-ball pool championships on Sunday.

Ranked sixth in 8-ball pool nationally, Talwar's fightback infused a sense of excitement into the proceedings in the event where players have to nominate the pocket in advance, apart from opting between solids and stripes on the table.

Punjab's Siddharth Anand realised the importance of patience in sight of target against local challenger Karan Anand in Group X. With scores tied at 3-all and only the decisive black to pot in the seventh rack, the former missed. The Maharashtra cueist punished his rival by grabbing the next two racks for a hard-earned win.

Petroleum Sports Promotion Board's Devendra Joshi came back from a 0-2 deficit to oust Umar Farooq of J & K 5-3 in Group G. Sarang Shroff went down 4-5 to Chandigarh's Rajat Khaneja in an exciting Group T tie.
