Dempo beats Mohun Bagan

Principal Correspondent

KOLKATA: Dempo SC (Goa) consolidated its position at the top of the table with a 2-1 win over Mohun Bagan in a fifth round encounter of the ONGC 11th National Football League at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Sunday.

The visitor overcame a goal deficit to find the mark once in each session.

Bagan took advantage of playing on home turf and found the lead in the 26th minute when ace striker Baichung Bhutia capped a fine move with a good finish.

However, the host failed to cling on to the lead as its defence committed crucial blunders.

Dempo struck the equaliser in the 36th minute through striker Ranti Martins while midfielder Climax Lawrence scored the decisive goal in the 60th minute.

The Goan side moved to 10 points from five matches while Bagan slipped to the bottom of the table with its third loss in five games. It has four points.
