TNSP (Chennai) clinches title

Madurai: Tamil Nadu Special Police (Chennai) lifted the BJPM Trophy defeating G.K. Motor Finance Hockey Club (Madurai) 3-1 via tie-breaker in the final of the eighth annual Hi-Tech Arai-Bharat Petroleum State-level hockey tournament organised by Thirunagar Hockey Club at Thirunagar ground here on Sunday. At the regulation time the teams were locked goal-less.

In the tie-breaker Pradeep, Parthiban and Krishnan scored for Police. For G.K. Motors, only A.G. Kannan scored.

In the third place play-off match, Chennai City Police beat Madurai City Police 4-0. Ramesh scored a brace and Parthiban and Baskaran were the other scorers.

Earlier in the semifinals G.K. Motors Finance club beat Chennai City Police 2-1. Vinodh and John Paul scored for the winner, while Parthiban scored for Chennai City Police. Tamil Nadu Special Police prevailed over Madurai City Police 6-4 via-breaker, after the teams were level 2-2 in the regulation time.

Krishnan and Rajendran scored for TN Special Police, while Soundarapandian and Sebastin scored for Madurai City Police.

In the tie-breaker Pradeep, Saravanan, Krishna Kumar and Palani scored for TNSP. For Madurai City Police, Kannan Deva and Sebastin scored.

Bharatwaj shines

Bharatwaj's 62 helped Spark Cricket Club defeat Freak Cricket Club by 23 runs in a Madurai District Cricket Association first division `A' zone league at Madurai on Sunday.

The scores:

First division `A' Zone): Spark CC 196 in 47.2 overs (Bharatwaj 62) bt Freak CC 173 in 44 overs.

B Zone: Majestic Cubs 116 in 33.2 overs bt Majestic Kids 93 in 25.3 overs (Prabu four for 23).

Second division: Thirunagar Rainbow CC 164 in 26.3 overs (Tilak 48) lost to Mercury Legends CC 165 for eight in 25.4 overs (Vimalnath 58); Supersonic Concord CC 193 for seven in 30 overs (Saravanan 40, Baskaran 41) lost to Crescent CC 194 for four in 22 overs (Mani 77 n.o., Kumar 51).

Syed Anwar triumphs

National `A' Player Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF (Chennai) won the title in the Arasan Fire Works 13th Tamil Nadu State rapid chess championship organised by Sivakasi Chess Club at Sivakasi Sunday. He scored 8.5 points in 11 rounds. M. Kunal of Madurai tied for the first place, but was placed second on the basis of progressive score.

Final placings: 1-2: Y. Syed Anwar Shazuli, M. Kunal 8.5; 3-5: P. Shyam Nikhil, P. Maheswaran, Dusthageer Ibrahim 8; 6: S. Ganesh Babu 7.5; 7-12: M.J. Noohu, R. Ramnath Bhuvanesh, A. Shankar, R. Preetham Sharma, M. Paramasivam, D.V. Surjeet 7.

Ganesh sparkles

Majestic chalked out a 57-run victory over Majestic Cubs in the Dindigul District Cricket Association first division league at Dindigul on Sunday.

The scores (First division): Majestic CC 212 for six in 31 overs (V. Ashok 56, D. Ganesh 76) bt Majestic Cubs CC 155 in 35 overs (M. Senthil Pandey 51); Nike CC (Oddanchatram) 235 for seven in 40 overs (Suresh 58, P. Rajesh 61, P. Alagarsamy five for 40) bt AP CC Pillayarnatham 137 in 28.3 overs (N. Sriram 41).

Third division: Alagar CC 96 in 18.1 overs lost to Play Boys CC 97 for four in 20 overs; Orange Shirt CC 71 for six in 23 overs (Ramesh four for four) lost to Seeni Bala CC (Vedasandur) 76 for two in 11 overs.

Semifinalists spotted

Host Einstein College of Engineering (Green), Arasan Ganesan Polytechnic College (Sivakasi), Ayya Nadar Janahiammal College (Sivakasi) and Sun Engineering College (Nagercoil) entered the semifinals of the William G. Morgan State-level invitation inter-collegiate volleyball tournament at Tirunelveli on Saturday.

The results (quarterfinals): Einstein CE (Green) bt Mepco CE (Sivakasi) 25-16, 27-29, 15-12; Arasan Ganesan Polytechnic College bt MDT Hindu College 25-11, 25-16; A.J. College (Sivakasi) bt PET EC (Vallioor) 25-12, 25-16; Sun Engg. (Nagercoil) bt Scad Engg. College (Cheranmadevi) 25-13, 25-12.
