India wins silver

NEW DELHI: India defeated Spain 8-5 in the last league match to settle for the silver in the Johnnie Walker Gold Cup international polo tournament at the Jaipur Polo ground here on Sunday.

It was the only win for India in the three-nation competition. England, with three points from two matches including a win over the host, walked away with the champion's purse of Rs. 4,00,000.

Skipper Angad Kalaan (5), Tarun Sirohi (2) and Abhimanyu Pathak scored the goals for the host, which took home Rs. 2,50,000.

Lucas Labat scored four goals for Spain in the match and was adjudged the `most valuable player' of the tournament. He was presented Rs. 50,000 and his team was awarded Rs. 1,50,000. Federico Espanol scored the other goal for the loser.

Jamuna was declared the `most valuable pony' of the tournament and was given Rs. 50,000.

Rajamata Gayatri Devi of Jaipur presented the trophy and the awards. — Special Correspondent
