`Demobilisation Day'

TUTICORIN: The district police celebrated the `Demobilisation Day' of Armed Reserve Battalion here recently.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Tirunelveli range), Kanhu Charan Mahali, and the Collector, R. Palaniyandi, gave away mementoes to Armed Reserve personnel, who put in distinguished service. The Superintendent of Police, John Nicholson, and the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Prabhudas, were present.

The function was followed by a feast and music concert.

Government officials take out procession

TUTICORIN: Officials affiliated to Tamil Nadu Government Officials Union took out a rally here recently to thank the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, for reintroducing welfare measures that were taken away during the previous regime.

About 80 employees from different departments participated in the rally, which was led by union president G. Soorya Moorthy.

"Steps to control price rise"

NAGERCOIL: The president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, M. Krishnasswamy, held a meeting with office-bearers of the district committee here on Sunday.

He told presspersons that steps had been taken to control the price rise of essential commodities. It was evident from the fact that the Government reduced the prices of petroleum products after a fall in the international market.

40 teachers get transfer orders

DINDIGUL: Forty graduate-teachers received transfer orders at a counselling session here on Saturday. Four teachers' trainers who sought transfer within the district also got transfer orders. The Department of Education conducted counselling session for graduate teachers seeking transfer within the district. Sixty teachers took part. - Staff Reporter

409 receive degrees in convocation

Thanjavur: A total of 409 candidates got their M.Phil., post-graduate and under-graduate degrees at the 18th annual convocation held at Sri AVVM Pushpam College at Poondi near Thanjavur on Saturday.

K. Thulasiah Vandayar, secretary and correspondent of the college presented the degrees to the students.

According to S. Balu, Principal of the college, 67 students got M.Phil. degree, 187 post graduate degree and 155 under-graduate degree at the convocation.

S. Mani, Controller of Examination, and Prof. S. Thillaiyadi Valliammai proposed a vote of thanks.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 82.49 feet against its full level of 120 feet, on Sunday.

The inflow was 231 cusecs and the discharge, 1,500 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Man dies in fire

ERODE: A 70-year-old man died in a fire here on Saturday.

According to the police, Avinashi of Ramanathapuram in Pudur, living alone, had thrown a burning cigarette butt on to the thatched roof of his hut on Friday.

The hut caught fire, and Avinashi sustained burns. He was admitted to Erode Government Headquarters Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Electrocuted

SALEM: Mariappan (27) of Elampillai was electrocuted when he accidentally came in contact with a live wire in his house on Saturday.

The police said he was trying to fix the television antenna when the incident took place. - Staff Reporter

Tension at Karnataka border

Hosur: Tension prevailed at Athipalli on the Karnataka border when more than 200 activists of the Adi Jambai Sanga and the Madiga Tandora Samithi took out a procession from Anaikal, attempting to cross the Tamil Nadu border on Sunday.

The activists blocked the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway and raised slogans against the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. The members also attempted to burn the effigies of the panel members. Heavy police pickets were posted at Zuzuvadi on the Tamil Nadu border to prevent any untoward incident. Vehicular traffic between the two States was suspended following the blockade.

Sources said a group of unidentified persons damaged the windscreen of a TNSTC bus at Lakkachandira near Bangalore by pelting stones. Traffic between the two States is likely to resume on Sunday night. — Staff Reporter

12 held under Wildlife Protection Act

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Gulf of Mannar Marine Park officials on Sunday arrested 12 persons of Valinokkam and Kilakarai on the charge of killing and possessing Dugong Dugon (sea cow) under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Wildlife Warden S. Shengabamoorthy and M. Rajendran, Forest Ranger, Kilakarai, said Ali Akbar of Valinokkam caught the mammal, an endangered species, using a net. The animalwas cut into pieces and sold at Kilakarai. The tractor, which was used for selling the animal, was also seized. Mr. Rajendran said they were produced before second Judicial Magistrate Sundaramoorthy. Ali Akbar is the former president of the Valinokkam panchayat.

Fishermen intercepted

PUDUKOTTAI: The Sri Lankan Navy is reported to have intercepted a group of Indian fishermen on the high seas and seized their fishing licences on Friday.

Ten fishermen from Ayyampattinam and Embavayal ventured into the sea on Thursday and the incident was reported to have occurred the next day. The Sri Lankan Navy personnel reportedly seized the licenses of a few fishermen, damaged their catamarans and seized their catch before letting them off. The fishermen returned to Kottaipattinam on Saturday morning. — Staff Reporter

Minister visits Keelkattalai

Chennai: Housing and Slum Clearance Minister Suba Thangavelan Minister, along with Labour Welfare Minister T.M. Anbarasan, visited Keelkattalai near Pallavaram to listen to grievances of people living in the area regarding the proposal to acquire the land by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board.

Residents, without wasting any time, pointed out to the Ministers that they constructed houses on `patta' only after acquiring due approvals from the government departments concerned. They said residential localities in the areas were well developed, and appealed to the Minister to drop a proposal formulated by the State Government 17 years ago.

The Ministers assured residents that their grievances would be looked into and that the issue would be sorted out amicably.

Pallavaram Municipal Chairman E. Karunanidhi and senior officials of the TNHB were present. — Staff Reporter
