MADURAI: In an attempt to reach out to school students, Anna University has asked affiliated engineering colleges to adopt a few schools in their vicinity and guide students about choosing their career.

"A new programme has been initiated wherein institutions are being requested to adopt local schools and mould students. And, some colleges have already come forward to adopt them," D. Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor of the Anna University, told the 8th Graduation Day address at the Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti (Virudhunagar district), near here on Sunday.

He said there was no provision as of now in the system to formally guide students about suitable career path and hence the university took up the initiative of adopting schools. He suggested that the education system should have an inbuilt mechanism for guiding school students in choosing their career.

Referring to the enormous job opportunities in the country due to its growing economy, he said the essential thing was to have employable graduates. According to him, the reports of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and NASSCOM pointed out that in the next five years about 10 lakh job opportunities would come up for engineering graduates while there was a short supply of suitable candidates.

Stating that every sector presented opportunities for youngsters, Dr. Viswanathan called for adequate focus on agriculture, education and manufacturing sectors also.

Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan urged the students to develop social consciousness and human values.

She said there was a sea change in India as the days of registering in employment exchanges were gradually replaced by campus interviews. The Minister emphasised that at the time of recruitment, companies were looking only at merit and communication skills but not at socio-economic background.

The Vice-Chancellor presented degree certificates to 375 engineering graduates.
