CHENNAI : Career choices now begin at school. That was the impression one gained at the `Career Carnival' organised by the Padma Seshadri Group of Schools on their K. K. Nagar campus on Saturday. With students from different schools eagerly listening to speakers and gathering around stalls, the event proved a platform for students to air doubts about career options. Inaugurating the event, Ravi Viswanathan, vice-president, Chennai head operations, Tata Consultancy Services, spoke on emerging fields in the country, which promised several opportunities. A big boom in the retailing industry was expected soon, he remarked. He said telecommunications, healthcare, pharmacy and biotechnology were growing fields, throwing open a wide range of opportunities. "One thing we have not done very well as a country is projecting India as an attractive tourist destination." Tourism and hospitality industries had an enormous potential, he added. Speaking on the recruitment scene in the information technology, he said that only 30 per cent of engineers graduating every year were employable. An alumnus of the school, Mr. Viswanathan said a lot of practices that came in handy at work were lessons leant at school. Dean and director of the group Mrs. Y. G. Parthasarathy said the carnival was aimed at giving students and more importantly, parents, information on career opportunities. Apart from 30 stalls of academic and training institutes, the event featured speakers from different careers, including former Chief Election Commissioner T. N. Seshan who spoke on options in civil services.
