Special Correspondent

Calls upon people to utilise welfare schemes

VILLUPURAM: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi inaugurated the Bharat Nirman exhibition on the premises of Ulundurpet panchayat union office on Sunday. The Minister said the exposition was being held from February 18 to 22 in rural areas to create awareness among the villagers about various welfare schemes. For instance, the National Rural Employment Gurarnatee scheme had come as a boon to rural people under which they would get an assured employment for 100 days in a year.

Under the Anna Marumalarchi Thittam basic amenities in each panchayat would be improved at a cost of Rs.20 lakh. The Karunanidhi Government had launched many schemes, including Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar marriage assistance scheme, maternity assistance scheme and Varumun Kappom Thittam. He called upon the people to utilise these schemes. District Collector Brajendra Navnith said the Press Information Bureau had organised the exposition under the guidance of its Director General Jeyaraj and Director Muthuvel.

The Collector pointed out that 82 per cent of the population in Villupuram district was living in villages. Therefore, the employment guarantee scheme, providing for the wages of Rs. 80 a day, would be highly beneficial to rural populace.

He said 1.20 lakh colour televisions had been sanctioned to the district for this year, to be distributed at the rate of 10,000 in each of the 12 Assembly segments.

Medical camps, eye camps and cultural programmes would mark the event. Besides this, the campaign would be taken to 35 village panchayats, along with skits and cultural programmes, the Collector added.
