`Mulayam regime may indulge in horse trading'

He must resign on moral grounds: Paswan

NEW DELHI: Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister and Lok Jan Shakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan said on Sunday that the Mulayam Singh Government should not be given an opportunity to prove its majority on the floor of the Assembly as it could involve in "horse trading."

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Paswan demanded that Chief Minister Mulayam Singh himself resign on moral grounds in the wake of the Supreme Court judgment disqualifying 13 BSP MLAs.

Mr. Paswan said that though his party was not opposed to the dismissal of the Government, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre would take a "unanimous" decision in this regard.

"The Chief Minister should resign on his own on moral grounds and set an example," Mr. Paswan said. To a question, he said Mr. Singh should not be given a chance to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly as it "would lead to large-scale horse-trading. We are not opposed to imposition of President's rule."

On the imposition of Centre's rule in the State, Mr. Paswan said it would be an automatic choice once Mr. Singh resigned. About his party's stand on invoking Article 356 in the State, Mr. Paswan said as the LJP was part of the Congress-led coalition at the Centre, "it will abide by whatever collective decision the Government takes on the matter."

"I have spoken to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the issue, but I cannot divulge details," he said. Mr. Paswan said his party would hold a "Maha-rally" in Lucknow on February 24 to showcase the LJP's strength in the State.
