Let Mulayam prove majority: Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Jayalalithaa on Sunday said the majority or minority status of the Uttar Pradesh Government should be decided only on the floor of the Assembly and not in the Raj Bhavan.

In a statement here, she said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre should wait till February 26 and allow Chief Minister Mulayam Singh to prove his majority in the Assembly.

Referring to Mr. Singh's statement that he would prove his Government's majority on the floor of the Assembly, Ms. Jayalalithaa said, "This is entirely in conformity with democratic norms and in accordance with the Constitution of India."

Accusing the Governor of Uttar Pradesh of adopting a "blatantly partisan attitude," she demanded that he should be recalled.

Ms. Jayalalithaa asked all political parties interested in upholding democracy to come forward to condemn the "Centre's move to murder democracy."
