`CPI(M) trying to gain control of Aralam farm'

Party supporting illegal occupation: DCC

  • `Home Minister should have acted'
  • `No Minister visited the farm'

KANNUR: The District Congress Committee (DCC) has accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leadership in the district of moves to gain control of the Aralam farm earmarked to be assigned to the landless Adivasis.

DCC president P. Ramakrishnan stated here that illegal entry into the farm and setting up of huts there by nearly 1000 Adivasis under the aegis of the pro-CPI(M) Adivasi Kshema Samithi (AKS) had the full backing of the CPI(M) leadership. "The CPI(M) had opposed it when Adivasis belonging to the Adivasi Gothra Mahasabha, led by C.K. Janu, occupied another part of the farm," he said.

Terming the encroachment of the farm by AKS activists as a violation of the State Government's stated stand, Mr. Ramakrishnan said the Government had earlier urged all Adivasi outfits to vacate lands they were occupying.

"Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan should have acted instead of appealing to the illegal occupants through the media. Not a single Adivasi family paid heed to the Home Minister's appeal," he said. AKS activists were still occupying the land, he added.

Congress leader and former MLA A.D. Musthafa said an explosive situation existed at the farm. No Minister cared to visit the farm, he added. Mr. Musthafa also alleged that moves were on to replace the list prepared in 2006 of Adivasi families to be rehabilitated in the farm. The list of 5000 Adivasi families was prepared last year. This is to make a fresh list of beneficiaries and ensure party control on the process of selection, he said. Mr. Musthafa said the Congress would never approve any second list.
