Pickpocketing: two arrested

Thiruvananthapuram: The police on Sunday arrested two persons who were wanted in several cases of pickpocketing. A police team led by Thampanoor Circle Inspector S.M. Zaheer and Sub-Inspector Sheen Tharayil arrested the duo red-handed on Saturday night while they were attempting to pick the pocket of a commuter at the Thampanoor bus station. Police said Hari alias Harilal, 36, and James, 45, were experts in using razor blades to tear the pocket of their victims and steal their purses. Harilal was also wanted in connection with several cases in Tamil Nadu. — Special Correspondent

Found hanging

Thiruvananthapuram: A 29-year-old youth who was found hanging in his house near Muttada on Sunday morning died at the hospital. The police said Sajan's family had found him hanging from the ceiling on their return from church. He was immediately rushed to hospital where he breathed his last. The police said Sajan was suffering from mental trauma. — Special Correspondent

THRISSUR: R. Sivakumar, Professor with Viswabharati, Shantiniketan, will deliver the K.C.S. Panicker Memorial Lecture here on February 22, under the auspices of the Lalitkala Akademi, Chennai, and the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi. Pavilion work begins

THRISSUR: Construction of a pavilion for the Thrissur Pooram exhibition from April 2 to May 22 began here on Sunday. Exhibition committee president K. Manoharan inaugurated the work. Perumpadappu Jathavedan Namboodiri, melshanti (chief priest) of the Paramekkavu temple, performed the Bhoomi Puja.

Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA; Mayor R. Bindu; the former Mayors Jose Kattukkaran and K. Radhakrishnan; and Francis Alapatt, director of the Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute, were present. — Staff Reporter

Art of Living course

THRISSUR: The Bangalore Vyakti Vikas Kendra will conduct a spiritual course designed by the Art of Living Foundation here from February 19 to 25. Reception accorded

KOCHI: Paulose Mar Miletios, Catholicos designate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, was accorded a reception in the city on Sunday.

Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi inaugurated the reception meeting. Zachariah Mar Anthonios, Metropolitan of the Kochi Diocese presided.

Head of the Chaldean Syrian Church Mar Aprem Metropolitan delivered the benedictory address. Sebastian Paul, MP, and K. V. Thomas and K. Babu, MLAs, were among those who offered felicitations.

Hindustan Latex to hold expo

Thiruvananthapuram: Hindustan Latex Ltd. will hold an exhibition of all its units at its Peroorkada plant on February 21 and 22. In a statement here on Sunday, HLL said Forest Minister Benoy Viswom would inaugurate the expo. The expo will give an insight into the working, manufacture and products of all HLL units in Thiruvananthapuram and Belgaum, the marketing and social sector projects and trading activities of the company. A vendors' meet and several interactive sessions would also be held during the expo, the statement said. — Special Correspondent

Folk arts fete

THRISSUR: The Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi will hold a folk arts festival here from February 20 to 26. Presentation of rare folk art forms, seminars and exhibitions will be held, according to a press release from Akademi secretary P. Gangadharan. — Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: The Calicut Medical College Students' Union has invited magazines from colleges for its `Best college magazine award.' The award is being instituted in connection with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Calicut Medical College. NGO Sangh slams Veliyam's remark

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala NGO Sangh on Sunday protested against CPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan's statement that the LDF would launch a drive against corruption among Government employees. The sangh in a statement here said the CPI leader should explain why the Civil Supplies Minister, a party leader, removed the Managing Director of the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation. — Special Correspondent

Public sector officers' campaign

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Public Sector and Autonomous Bodies Officers' Federation is observing 2007 as `Public Sector protection year.' The State-level function marking the start of the observance would be held at Thiruvananthapuram on February 21. CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan would inaugurate. — Special Correspondent

More relief for victims sought

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress has demanded more relief to the victims of the Anchuthengu fire. In a statement here, DCC president V.S. Sivakumar, who visited the area with G. Karthikeyan, MLA, held discussions with officials on the relief measures. — Special Correspondent
