Surrender gun, M.V. Raghavan tells Pinarayi

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Former Minister and Communist Marxist Party (CMP) leader M.V. Raghavan says he cannot be included in the list of political leaders who carry guns fearing a threat to their lives.

"I have a licensed gun not because I face any threat to my life, and I am ready to surrender the revolver if (CPI-M State secretary) Pinarayi Vijayan would follow suit," he said in his inaugural speech at the State conference of the Kerala Cooperative Workers' Federation (KCWF) here on Sunday. Mr. Raghavan said he still possessed the firearm, as he had got it as a gift. Announcing that he was ready to surrender the gun, the CMP leader dared Mr. Vijayan to do the same.

He said the CPI(M) now had no right to say that it was a working class party. It was a party that was amassing wealth, Mr. Raghavan said adding that the party was using intimidation to collect huge funds through donations.

Staff Reporter writes from Thrissur: CPI(M) central committee member E.P. Jayarajan on Sunday said that no investigation was needed into the seizure of ammunition from Mr. Vijayan.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Jayarajan said Mr. Vijayan had documents for the ammunition and his explanation should settle the issue.

"The media are targeting Mr. Vijayan. The media syndicate that Mr. Vijayan had referred to is receiving funds from abroad, he said. The reports of this syndicate are causing confusion among the CPI(M) rank and file." The CPI(M) central committee member said Manjalamkuzhi Ali was involved more in business than in politics.
