Anand starts with a draw

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand started his campaign in the Morelia-Linares Super Grandmaster chess tournament with an effortless draw against favourite Veselin Topalov in Morelia, Mexico, on Saturday.

In the day's only decisive battle, lasting 5-1/4 hours, the youngest participant, Norway's Magnus Carlsen, overpowered Russia's Alexander Morozevich in 68 moves of King's Indian.

The results (first round): Veselin Topalov (Bul) drew with Viswanathan Anand (Ind); Peter Svidler (Rus) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm); Magnus Carlsen (Nor) bt Alexander Morozevich (Rus); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) drew with Peter Leko (Hun).

Second round pairings: Anand-Svidler; Ivanchuk-Topalov; Aronian-Carlsen; Leko-Morozevich.
