Pulichintala to have 24 gates

M. Malleswara Rao

"It is now up to the Government to accept the report and take a decision"

HYDERABAD: The Disputes Adjudication Board (DAB), which was formed by the Government to settle disputes, if any, between contractors of the irrigation projects and the Irrigation Department, has cleared 24 gates for Pulichintala project.

A dispute arose over the number of the crest-gates to be erected, with the department insisting on 33 gates for the dam while the contractors, M/s Srinivasa Constructions, suggesting that 24 would do. The contractors held the view that the dam with 24 gates would satisfy all other specifications required to store 45 tmcft (thousand million cubic ft) of Krishna water as planned.

Delay

The dispute was finally referred to the DAB, resulting in delay in execution of the project.

Comprising three retired engineers -- L.R. Kapoor, N. Kishen and M. Ramamohan, the committee submitted its report to the Government, recommending that 24 gates would suffice. "It is now up to the Government to accept the report and take a decision", a senior official said.

M/S Srinivasa Constructions was awarded the project for execution through

EPC (engineering procurement & construction) mode. While opting for this mode, the Government would merely outline its broad objectives of the project like storage of 45 tmcft and would suggest the design.

The contractors could come out with their design to fulfil the objectives.

Meanwhile, plans are afoot to impound at least 15 tmcft of water by July as the concrete structure reached a stage.

With this, the water for Krishna delta will become almost assured for raising nurseries for kharif, regardless of availability in Nagarjunasagar.
