Commodities seized

ANANTAPUR: As part of the raids on mills and wholesale traders of essential commodities, the officials of Civil Supplies Department seized red gram dal and raw and green peas worth Rs. 13.5 lakhs in Kadiri on Saturday . According to the information reaching here, civil supplies officials led by DSO Sambasiva Rao raided a dal mill located behind Narasimhaswamy temple and the godowns of two wholesale traders.

Youth drowned

KURNOOL: A youth identified as Ismail (17) drowned in KC Canal at Sunkesula barrage on Saturday. According to reports, the victim got drowned when he went to the rescue of another youth Rizwan, who was about to drown.

Cases booked

Madanapalle: Weights and Measures officials raided the premises of some traders in the busy Appa Rao street here and seized 420 quintals of cereals worth Rs. 30 lakhs. . Medical camp

KADAPA: The Kadapa police organised a mega medical camp at Police Parade Grounds here, in which doctors of Mediciti Hospitals, Hyderabad, gave medicines free of cost on Sunday. .

ANANTAPUR: Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) K. Rajagopal released a textbook titled `Theory of Power Electronics' authored by Ch. Sai Babu, a professor in electrical engineering in JNTU College of Engineering here on Sunday.

Two killed in accident

ANANTAPUR: Two persons were killed and 13 others were injured when a seven-seater autorickshaw was allegedly hit by a lorry near Ralla Anantapuram village of Mudigubba mandal on NH-205 in the district on Sunday.

Funds for scholarships

HYDERABAD: Finance Minister K. Rosaiah on Sunday agreed to substantially increase the allocation for scholarships and fee reimbursement for students belonging to the backward classes.

He gave the assurance to a delegation of the Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association, which held discussions with him on the budget. Association president R. Krishnaiah led the delegation. - Special Correspondent

CPI names Puvvada

HYDERABAD: The CPI has announced the name of Puvvada Nageswara Rao, former MLA and national council member, as its candidate for Legislative Council elections next month. The party's State Council, which met here on Sunday, decided to contest two seats. It would finalise the candidate for the other seat shortly, party secretary K. Two girls drowned?

VIZIANAGARAM: Two minor girls were feared drowned in the Suvarnamukhi while crossing it on Sunday evening. According to Sitanagaram police, while the body of K. Lakshmi was retrieved, the body of G. Padma washed away.

G. Syamala, another girl, who accompanied them, survived. They were returning to Lakshmipuram, their native in Sitanagaram mandal, after attending a function at China Ankalam village. - Correspondent

Hyderabad: A delegation of All-India Urdu Educational Committee led by its chairman Mohd. Jaleel Pasha, met J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, here on Sunday and discussed problems pertaining to Urdu language and minority welfare. - Staff Reporter

Horticulture show

KARIMNAGAR: District Collector M.V. Satyanarayana inaugurated a three-day horticulture show at the SRR kalyana mandapam in Karimnagar town on Sunday.

The Horticulture Department has set up 307 stalls including 225 for vegetables, 10 for fruits, four for flowers and 68 for aromatic plants.

The attraction of the horticulture show was the flower decorations and vegetable carvings. Prizes would be given to the best horticulture farmers.

JD (agriculture) Ramesh and AD (horticulture) Sukender Reddy were present.

Gadar indisposed

ADILABAD: Balladeer Gadar, who is in the coal belt area in Adilabad district on his padayatra for separate Telangana State, complained of chest pain on Sunday afternoon when he went to unveil a memorial column for miners at Ramakrishnapur. He was taken to a hospital at Mandamarri.

He later participated in the cultural programme at Mandamarr.
