Literary award instituted

DHARWAD: The Dharwad-based Avani Rasikara Ranga has instituted a literary award in the name of the late writer Devangana Shastri of Gokarna who died in 1951. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 and will be given to a budding woman short story writer in Kannada, N.P. Bhat, working president of the organisation said in a release. The association has requested woman writers to send their maiden collection of short stories or unpublished collection of short stories to Avani Rasikara Ranga, "Avani", 217, 3rd Cross, 2nd Main, Narayanapur, Dharwad-580008 or call 0836- 2472131 before April. — Staff Correspondent

Photo exhibition

GADAG: An exhibition of rare photographs highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the State will be held on the Gadag Municipality premises from Monday as part of the "Suvarna Karnataka" celebration. Recovered

DHARWAD: The Dharwad Police have arrested two persons and recovered jewellery worth Rs. 1.40 lakh. They have given the names of those arrested as Hanumanth R. Chauhan (37) and Ravi S. Chauhan (23), residents of Jatta in Sangli district of Maharashtra. Another accused in the case Dattu Chauhan is reportedly at large. A case has been registered at the Dharwad Suburban Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

BSNL offer

Belgaum: The BSNL has announced an offer of landline connections without any installation charge up to March 31, 2007. The offer is applicable only to subscribers in Belgaum, Chikkodi, Athani, Gokak and Bailhongal towns, according to a BSNL release here on Saturday.

Money released

Bidar: The Naranja Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane has released money due to the farmers who supplied sugarcane. The money will be deposited in the bank accounts of the 825 farmers who have supplied sugarcane till November 15. The factory is releasing Rs. 800 for a tonne of sugarcane supplied. Sugarcane from member-farmers would be crushed on priority, said the release. — Staff Correspondent

Auditors take out procession

HASSAN: The District Tax Consultant Association took out a silent procession in Hassan on Saturday protesting against the tribunal award. They sat in silence in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office and presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda.

Speaking to presspersons a representative of the association Nagaraj said lot of injustice was done to Karnataka and that Karnataka Government should not accept the award. It should instead file a revision petition before the tribunal. Tax consultants M. Balakrishna and B.P. Ishami Gowda were present. — Staff Correspondent

Tiger, peacock adopted

MYSORE: Animal adoption at the century-old Mysore Zoo is becoming popular with more individuals coming forward to adopt animals and birds under the animal adoption scheme. B.I. Venkataram of Mysore and Rajesh M.N. of Bangalore have adopted a peacock and a tiger for a period of one year and three months respectively. The tiger has been adopted for the period between February 10, 2007 and May 9, 2007, and the peacock for the period between February 9, 2007 and February 8, 2008 by paying an adoption fee of Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent

Karate championship

MYSORE: As many as 400 karatekas took part in the State-level championship organised by the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Seibukan Karate-Do Mysore in association with Rotary Club of Mysore West in Mysore. Tension at Karnataka border

Hosur: Tension prevailed at Athipalli on the Karnataka border when more than 200 activists of the Adi Jambai Sangha and the Madiga Dandora Samiti took out a procession from Anekal, attempting to cross the Tamil Nadu border on Sunday.

The activists blocked the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway and raised slogans against the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. The members also attempted to burn the effigies of the panel members. — Staff Reporter

Centre releases Rs. 50 lakh as relief

Belgaum: The Centre has released Rs. 50 lakh towards distribution as relief to the growers indebted with farm loans.

According to an official release here on Saturday, the funds released under the Prime Minister's Relief Fund are to be utilised only to meet the health expenses and education of children of the farmers. Each farmer will get Rs.10,000. So far, 121 farmers have received the compensation. — Staff Correspondent

Project near Mekedatu suggested

Bangalore: V. Somanna, MLA, has suggested that the Centre should take up a mega project with a capacity to impound 50 tmcft of water near Mekedatu on the Cauvery to set right the injustice meted to the State by the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said that the project would enable production of around 1000 MW of power, besides facilitating irrigation and drinking water requirements of Bangalore. — Staff Reporter
