Onion price rise worries BJD-BJP

Government initiates steps to keep the rate under check

BERHAMPUR: Steep rise in the price of onion has made the BJD-BJP Government in Orissa panicky as the panchayat polls are yet to be over.

District collectors have been instructed to direct the Civil Supplies Department to open special outlets and to use PDS shops to sell onion at subsidised price.

At the orders of the Civil Supply Department, onion is being sold at Rs. 13 or Rs. 14 per kg at PDS shops in rural and urban areas of the State. The process started at 133 PDS shops in Berhampur from Sunday.

Price of onion touched Rs. 20 per kg during past few days and now it is ranging between Rs. 16 and Rs. 18 according to quality and size.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also took note of this crisis situation of onion in market and has initiate official measures to deal with the crisis, said the BJD MLA of Berhampur, R.C.C. Patnaik.
