Field and technical assistants accused of misappropriating funds

  • `Only Rs. 35 cr. of Rs. 500 cr. allotted to Mahabubnagar spent'
  • Not more than Rs. 40 being paid to each labourer

MAHABUBNAGAR: Allegations against works taken up under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) rocked the meeting of Zilla Parishad general body here on Sunday.

Several ZPTC members of Telugu Desam brought to the notice of Zilla Parishad Chairman K. Damodar Reddy, who presided over the meeting, instances of irregularities and misappropriation of funds released under the scheme. Vangoor ZPTC member G. Jaipal Yadav alleged that field and technical assistants in his mandal swindled amount to the tune of Rs. 50 lakhs by creating job cards on Benami labourers. He said such irregularities have also been reported in other mandals. He demanded that members of the Zilla Parishad general body be furnished with details of works taken up in the district.

Achampet ZPTC member Manohar Pokala (TDP) said that while Rs. 500 crores have been allocated to the district, only Rs. 35 crores was spent this year. He alleged that not more than Rs. 40 was being paid to each labourer despite doing more work. So many were migrating to other places in search of better wages.
