Another BJP MLA quits party post in Chhattisgarh

Upset over functioning of the State Govt.

Raipur: Not happy with the functioning of his own Government in Chhattisgarh, BJP MLA Devji Bhai Patel has resigned from the post of party's whip, party sources said on Sunday.

Although in his resignation letter Mr.Patel did not mention any reason, party sources said he had resigned as he was not happy with the performance of his own party Government in the State.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ajay Chandrakar confirmed having received the letter from Mr.Patel but he refused to divulge details.

Since this is the second resignation within one month - Amar Agrawal resigned from the Cabinet as Finance and Urban Development Minister following differences with Chief Minister Raman Singh - the party and the Government had taken the matter seriously.

Mr. Singh had called him up on Saturday at his residence and urged him to withdraw the resignation, which was turned down by the young MLA from Dharsiwa of Raipur district, sources said.

Although Mr.Patel is a first timer in the House, he said: ``I resigned as I want new MLAs to come forward and take up responsibilities''.

However, party sources said Mr. Patel had been grilling the State Government on the issue of pollution as he had been representing an industrial belt in the State Assembly.

He several times clashed with Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Bhagat on the issue and the difficulties faced by farmers and common men of his constituency, they said.

Mr. Patel was being replaced with Trilochan Patel, another dissident leader of Mahasamund district, party sources said. PTI
