Man with pistol held near Sonia's rally

Dehra Dun: A man was with a country-made pistol and cartridges was arrested from an election rally of Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Almora on Sunday, after which the authorities sounded an alert across Uttarakhand in the run up to the February 21 Assembly elections.

Kedar Singh (42) was arrested when he was trying to sneak into the rally at the hilly township of Almora, moments before Ms.Gandhi was to address the election meet, SP Almora Satish Kumar Shukla told PTI.

He said Singh is being interrogated for further details. Initial reports suggested that Singh, who hails from Bageshwar district, was mentally upset for sometime.

Police sources said Singh had hidden the pistol in his pocket and two cartridges in the gloves. But when he was trying to enter the Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Stadium, the venue of the rally, he was frisked by policemen who found the pistol hidden in the pocket.

Later, two cartridges were also found from the gloves wore by Singh, they added.

Singh, who was working in general post office Almora, was not keeping any relations with his family members.

Singh told the interrogators that he bought the pistol for Rs 3,000 but never used it. ``We are verifying all the details being given by Singh,'' said a police official, adding his medical examination is also being conducted. PTI
