SHIMLA: The special Sericulture Project launched in Hamirpur district of the hill State has so far covered 865 BPL families. The overwhelming success of the project, launched through Self Help Groups, has come as a pleasant surprise, claimed a Government spokesman here on Sunday. He said the Rs. 9.13-crore project envisages supplementing the income of IRDP families in all the six developmental blocks of the district. Construction of 1000 rearing huts for silk worms and distribution of rearing equipments had also been taken up. In order to promote the growing of mulberry plants, S-146 variety of mulberry was obtained from Dehra Dun and raised by the beneficiaries on wastelands and private lands. An amount of Rs. 40,000 had been given to each family for making the sheds, he added
