NEW DELHI: Residents' Welfare Associations in the Capital have warned that any move by the Government or the discoms to increase electricity tariffs would be met with stiff opposition. The Supreme Court's decision allowing private power distribution companies to raise the depreciation rate to 6.69 per cent from the current rate of 3.75 is expected to escalate electricity tariffs in the city. The RWAs complained that most parts of the Capital have been facing long power cuts, coupled with fast running meters, inflated bills and no proper consumer redress system. "The Delhi Government, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission and the private discoms have been working against the interests of the consumers since privatisation. It has brought more problems for the residents than relief," said Ram Vihar RWA secretary V. N. Bali. "The private power companies have failed to curb power cuts or improve the distribution network. They have not been able stop power thefts and honest consumers are paying more for the inefficiency of the discoms," said Sanjay Kaul of People's Action. J. S. Chadha of RWA Federation of East of Kailash said: "The private discoms won contracts on the basis that they would reduce power . But nothing of that sort is visible. "
