BJP plans to field local leaders

Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party would be fielding local residents as its candidates in almost all the wards during the forthcoming elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in order to strengthen its prospects in the polls.

Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan said with notification of all the 272 wards over the weekend, the party would within 72 hours shortlist prospective candidates for each of the wards. "Prepared after widespread consultations, the list would be sent to the State office for selection of candidates."

One thing on which the party is very clear, Dr. Vardhan said, is that all candidates, barring a few exceptions if need be, would be local residents so that they are able and willing to take up issues pertaining to their areas in a better way. "The other criteria will be the commitment of the candidate, his or her belief in the ideals of the party, etc ."

Overall, the Delhi BJP president said, the party would continue to raise local, State level as well as Central issues during the polls. As for the Delhi Government, the BJP would raise the issue of its failure to meet the water and power needs of the people. "People have been crying themselves hoarse over fast running electronic meters but nothing has been done to alleviate their sufferings. We will also talk about issues pertaining to sealing and demolitions and how no rehabilitation package has been chalked out by the Government for the affected people." As regards the Central Government, Dr. Vardhan said its anti-people policies have been responsible for the price rise.
