KOCHI: "I have spent a good part of my life in Ernakulam," reminisced Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan, as he spoke at a reception accorded to him on Sunday by the people of the city led by Kochi Corporation. "But my first visit to the city was as a 10-year old," he said.
First visit
"I had accompanied my father and his friend, who had to come here to write an examination. It was after much crying that I was included in the team that went to Ernakulam. I had wanted to see the city. But all I did after coming here was sleep (after crying a lot the night before) at a bench in the SRV School, where the examination was taking place and the only place I visited was one Tripura Sundari Hotel to have food.
As a student
"Then I came to join the Maharaja's College. A number of people in the college in those days are some prominent persons now. It had a different cultural aura then. We had spent many evenings listening to great speeches by some great men, including those of educationist Joseph Mundassery, poet G. Sankara Kurup and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. TDM Hall was one of the venues for many cultural meetings," the Chief Justice said. The Kerala High Court undoubtedly has one of the pre-eminent benches in the country, he said. "I do not say this because I belong here," he said. There have been some landmark judgments from the bench here. The people of the State are also much more legally aware than those in other States, he said.
