Resume telecast

of Tamil channels

Sir, — It is a matter of regret that all Tamil television channels have been blocked by cable operators after the Cauvery verdict was announced. In what way is the verdict and blocking of Tamil channels related? Even after the bandh, the situation continues. These channels are the only source of entertainment for Tamil-speaking people. People living in Bangalore for several years have become "citizens" of Karnataka. It is time the Government took steps and issued instructions to all cable operators to resume telecast of Tamil channels immediately.

Increase interest

on NSS deposits

Sir, — The interest rate on NSS '87 (National Savings Scheme) deposits in post offices was 11 per cent till 2002-2003. From April 2003, the interest rate was reduced to 7.5 per cent without giving any alternative opportunities to the investors. Most of the investors are senior citizens. The present rate of interest is too low for a deposit of around 20 years. There is an urgent need to increase it to around 10 per cent as inflation has gone up and banks are offering an interest rate of 9 per cent to 9.6 per cent on deposits made by senior citizens.

Postpone plan to divert traffic

Sir, — The proposal to divert traffic in the central areas of the city in view of the Metro rail project comes at a time when students of standards 10, 11 and 12 have their examinations. Would it not be appropriate to introduce these changes post April in the interest of students?

Not a natural happening

Sir, — Of late, we are hearing about stray dogs attacking people. The entire city is in the grip of fear and people want all such dogs to be culled. This sort of sudden change in the behaviour of stray dogs is not a natural happening. I also observe a sudden spurt in the number of stray dogs in my locality. This implies that such dogs from different areas are being dumped here. All this seems to be a part of some big game plan to cull all stray dogs. The authorities concerned have to thoroughly investigate the matter.

Notice on

property tax

Sir, — In the past few months, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has been sending out property tax revision notices selectively. The notice states that it is under the Self-assessment Scheme of 2000. However, it does not give details of the tax comput-ation method adopted by the BMP. The BMP has not published any amendments to the Self-assessment Scheme 2000 rules booklet nor has there been any official notification on this. The Revenue Department employees are saying the notices are being issued on instructions from the Commissioner's office.
