dated February 20, 1957: Signature of voters

The Election Commission has turned down the request of some of the political parties that the rule requiring the taking of signature or thumb impression of voters before they exercised their franchise should be cancelled. The decision of the Election Commission has been conveyed to the Madras Government. It might be recalled that some of the representatives of political parties had made a representation to the Chief Electoral Officer, Madras, that the rule for taking signature or thumb impression sought to be enforced in some of the constituencies should be cancelled. This request was conveyed by the Madras Government to the Election Commission, which has stated that the requirement of taking signature or thumb impression was accepted on the suggestion of recognised political parties at an all-party conference. About the criticism that the taking of thumb impression or signature would retard the progress of polling, the Commission has said it is not a correct picture of the situation, pointing out that the signature or thumb impression is taken immediately before the ballot paper is handed over to the voter and while the serial number of the ballot paper is being noted on the working copy of the electoral roll.
