JAFFNA: The University of Jaffna, which was forced to close in August due to resurgent fighting between Sri Lanka's military and separatist rebels in the area, reopened on Monday. Vice-chancellor R. Kumaravadivel declared the university open after a brief ceremony to honour Krishnan Kamalathas a 24-year-old student who was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Jaffna a day earlier. Mr. Kumaravadivel urged the students to return to the university despite the risk. ``We are trying to get the university functioning with the support of all sides. Already we have lost five months and I don't want to lose anymore time,'' Mr. Kumaravadivel said. The university first opened in 1974. AP
