Drop fast plan at Rajiv Gandhi memorial: PMK

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: Pattali Makkal Katchi parliamentary party leader M. Ramadoss has called upon the panchayat presidents of Puducherry to drop their plan to observe fast at the memorial of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumbudur on February 22 to urge the Puducherry administration to sanction administrative and financial powers to elected municipal bodies.

`A step in wrong direction'

In a release here on Monday, Mr. Ramadoss said a fast to highlight the grievances of municipal bodies of Puducherry outside the Union Territory would be a step in the wrong direction, though the grievances were genuine.

Mr. Ramadoss said it was perplexing that the administration had not yet granted powers to the elected civic bodies.

The orders issued recently did not prove helpful in any way to the village panchayats.
