Congress afraid of annoying Left: Rajnath

Special Correspondent

BJP assures support if and when issue of President's rule comes before Parliament

  • Verdict has made it clear that SP Government is "illegal"
  • Congress "not honest" in attitude to U.P.

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh on Monday charged the United Progressive Alliance Government with not fulfilling its constitutional responsibility of ensuring that an "illegal" regime did not continue in Uttar Pradesh.

    Full support

Even as it offered full support to the ruling party if and when President's rule in Uttar Pradesh came before Parliament for approval, the BJP chief said the Congress was afraid of annoying its Left partners.

In short, he was trying to tempt the Congress to win parliamentary approval for such a step with the help of the Opposition rather than count on its own allies and supporting parties.

The February 14 Supreme Court judgment made it clear that the Samajwadi Party Government was unconstitutional. "I reiterate and emphasise: President's Rule must be imposed," Mr. Singh said here.

The Congress did not "show honesty" in its attitude to Uttar Pradesh and the Samajwadi Party.

The two parties were supporting each other till recently and simultaneously abusing each other publicly. Even before the Nithari (Noida) killings came to light, the BJP wanted President's rule clamped, as lawlessness prevailed in the State. Its leaders met President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam months ago to make the demand, he said.
