Chidambaram lists steps taken to check prices

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Under attack for the `runaway' inflation, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram briefed the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday about the measures being taken to contain the spiralling prices of essential commodities.

With the measures failing to reflect on the prices, CWC members were apprehensive of the political costs the party might have to pay for the inflation. They pointed out that the Finance Ministry's argument of inflation being a necessary concomitant of a booming economy was of little consolation to the "aam aadmi" buckling under escalating costs.

The meeting was convened to discuss the current economic and political situation in the country, according to All-India Congress Committee general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi. It began with a condolence reference to the victims of the explosions on the Samjhauta Express.

Mr. Chidambaram then listed the measures the Government had taken over the past year to keep the prices in check.

He pointed to steps taken to increase supply of wheat and pulses.

The Government decided to release four lakh tonnes of wheat for February and March under the Open Market Sales Scheme.

Supplies would be increased to those areas which reported high retail prices in wheat, he said.
