Centre has rejected request for allocation of 500 MW of power: Kumaraswamy

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Monday assured the people of the State that he would make adequate efforts to ensure that people were not put to hardship during summer because of the power supply situation.

Mr. Kumaraswamy, who recently met Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in Delhi, and sought allocation of 500 MW of power to Karnataka from the surplus quota of the Central generating stations, said the Centre had indicated that it would be difficult to make such an allocation at present.

According to sources, Karnataka is facing a shortage of about 500 to 600 MW of power at present.

However, the Chief Minister said the Union Power Minister had told him that Karnataka was one of the very few States which was facing lesser shortage of power.

The shortage in Maharashtra was 5,000 MW and in Gujarat it was close to 3,500 MW.

Meeting

Mr. Kumaraswamy, who also heads a Cabinet sub-committee formed to decide on whether to impose loadshedding or to buy costly power to make up for the shortage, said he had already held a round of meeting with officials of the power sector.

He had directed them to handle the available limited resources efficiently.

"We have limited resources. But we will handle them in such a way that it will not lead to any anger among general public," he said.

He said the State had decided to expedite the implementation of the ongoing power generation projects.
