`Death sentence for Karnataka'

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: "Death sentence for Karnataka." This is how Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa described the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, on Monday.

He made the statement in the Legislative Assembly when Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj urged him to indicate the State's stand on the Cauvery tribunal verdict.

Maintaining that injustice had been meted out to Karnataka by the tribunal, he, however, said that the State would decided its future course of action based on the suggestions at the all-party meeting in Bangalore on February 24 and the MPs meeting in Delhi on February 22.

Mr. Yediyurappa observed that there were two legal recourses before the State — going before the tribunal seeking clarification and filing a special leave petition before the Supreme Court. However, the final decision would be taken by the proposed all-party meeting, he said.

But Mr. Nagaraj demanded that the Government should announce its stand without hesitation and also adopt a resolution in the Assembly in this regard.

He finally staged a walkout to protest the delay by the Government to announce its stand on the issue.

Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh made it clear that the Congress did not have any differences with other parties on the Cauvery issue.
