High Court judge Mishra passes away

Several judges and others pay last respects

CUTTACK: Justice Jaya Prakash Mishra, a sitting judge of Orissa High Court, who was elevated to the bench in September 2004, died in a hospital here on Monday. He was 59. He is survived by 80-year-old mother Raseswari Devi, wife Meera, a son and a daughter.

The mortal remain of Mishra was later consigned to flames at `Swarg Dwar' at Puri.

After his body was shifted to his official residence at Cantonment Road here, professionals from legal fraternity and several eminent citizens of the city rushed to his house to pay their last homage to the departed soul. Justice A.K. Ganguly, the acting chief justice and all judges of the High Court, including district judges, advocate-general, members of several Bars were first to arrive his house to condole the bereaved family members.

Home Secretary T.K. Mishra placed a wreath on the body on behalf of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. State Law Minister B.B. Harichandan and several political leaders also paid their last respects to Justice Mishra.

Courts closed

The High Court and other lower courts in several parts of the State remained closed for the day as a mark of respect.

Justice Mishra was born in Sonepur in the undivided district of Balangir on January 9, 1947. He did his schooling at Bargarh and passed matriculation examination in 1964. Thereafter he became a student of GM College in Sambalpur and graduated in 1969.

After obtaining law degree from Lala Lajpat Rai Law College in Sambalpur, he started his career as an advocate at Sonepur in 1973.

In the year 1990, he was directly appointed to the post of second additional district judge and posted at Berhampur in Ganjam district.

Before elevated to the High Court bench as an additional judge on September 29, 2004, Justice Mishra had successfully served as additional district judge of Bhadrak and Cuttack, district judge of Cuttack, Baripada and Berhampur. He too served as Commissioner of endowments and judge of family court at Cuttack.

Condolence meet

BERHAMPUR: Members of the Ganjam Bar, judges and officials of the District Judge court held a meeting to condole the death of Justice Jayaprakash Mishra of Orissa High Court at the District Judge Court hall on Monday.

All courts at the district judge court were adjourned for the day. Justice Mishra served as the district judge of Ganjam and Gajapati.
