Shock, anguish over Panipat blasts

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai has expressed anguish and shock at the tragic blasts in which over 66 people lost their lives near Panipat late on Sunday night. In a message on Monday, Dr. Kidwai said a handful of anti-social elements were trying to derail the ongoing talks between India and Pakistan to improve relations. The first priority now was to ensure that the injured got proper medical care, he added.

Conveying his condolences to the kith and kin of the victims, he appealed to the people to maintain solidarity for thwarting the evil designs of the terrorists.

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who rushed to Panipat on Monday morning, has ordered an inquiry into the incident. He said the injured were being given best available medical aid.

DGP R.S. Dalal said a general alert had been sounded in the entire State.

Indian National Lok Dal president Om Parkash Chautala in a statement here sought stringent action against the culprits. "It is very unfortunate that whenever India and Pakistan are on the verge of improving mutual relations, incidents like this happen to derail the peace process,'' he added.
