Mattoo case convict's death sentence stayed
Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Supreme Court on Monday stayed execution of the death sentence awarded by the Delhi High Court to Santosh Kumar Singh, son of a former IPS officer,in the Priyadarsini Mattoo murder case.
A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice R.V. Raveendran stayed the sentence while admitting an appeal filed by Santosh challenging the High Court verdict that heldhim guilty of raping and murdering the victim. The bench issued notice to the CBI.
In his appeal, Santosh contended that the acquittal by the trial court was correct and that the High Court judgment reversing the acquittalwas perverse and not in accordance with various judgments of the apex court.
