THE BEST: Indira Williams, principal, Baldwin Girls' High School, receiving the Best Institution Award from Air Commodore S. Srivasthava.
BANGALORE: Windermere High School and Windermere Public School, Magadi Road, conducted their annual sports meet in the city recently. S.N. Shankar Murthy, general secretary, Karnataka State Primary School Teachers' Association, who was the chief guest, declared the sports meet open. The programme began with a march past by the contingents of various houses of the school. The sports captain took the oath on behalf of the participants. The track events were interspersed with mass drills by students. Children of the nursery section presented "apple drill" and those of the primary section "umbrella drill." High school students presented "gymno drill." Praveen Kumar and Gayathri emerged the individual champions. Green House lifted the champion's trophy. The chief guest gave away prizes to the winners. School president V. Shivashankar welcomed the gathering.
Best institution
It was given in recognition of the social service and adventurous activities conducted by the school. Air Commodore S. Srivasthava presented the award to school principal Indira Williams. Lt. Col. Bharath Prakash, Commanding Officer, 8 Karnataka Battalion NCC, and NCC Officer Umera Parveen were present.

The celebration spread over two days was inaugurated in a unique way. Children of the nursery section kicked it off by releasing balloons into the air. The cultural programme included a Yakshagana performance. A fusion dance in which the students swayed to the tunes of Indian and Western music was the highlight of the programme. On the second day, Sharath Chandra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), was the chief guest. He gave away prizes to meritorious students. He gave tips on good parenting and stressed the importance of co-curricular activities. Mr. Sharath Chandra also spoke on how his department worked and played a vital role in maintaining law and order apart from giving protection to the public. The cultural programme included a cowboy dance by students of classes II and III. Principal A.S. Dikshit said, "Children are the most beautiful flowers in the garden of God and childhood is the most pleasurable time in one's life."School president presided over the function.
Annual prize day
Moitreyi Patnayak, Deputy Manager; Yallaki Gowda, Deputy Secretary, Bangalore Zilla Parishad; Tara Jayaram, General Manager, Biocon; and H.M. Shashidhar, Director, Clear Water Technology Pvt. Ltd.; were the chief guests. They distributed prizes to meritorious students. They exhorted the students to pursue their interests in academics as well as co-curricular activities. "Health and hygiene," `Golden South" and "Suvarna Karnataka" were some of the themes for the cultural programme.
