Police Commissioner Balwinder Singhwith the seized weapons

HYDERABAD: The mastermind behind the attempt on the life of a financier C. Krishna Yadav was an office superintendent of railways, A.S. Raju, the police said on Monday.

He was into real estate business and was being harassed by Yadav, who is accused of involvement in two murders, City Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh told a press conference.

Harassment

Unable to cope with the harassment, Raju joined hands with the financier's rival Jampaiah and allegedly plotted to get Yadav killed by two Warangal natives - D. Chalapathi and D. Raju. They were offered Rs. 3. 5 lakhs, Mr. Singh said. All the four were arrested. A pistol with five live rounds and four mobile phones were seized.

The assailants procured the pistol from one K. Ramaswamy, a surrendered naxalite of CPI-ML Prathighatana group for Rs. 20,000. For four months, they stalked Yadav but refrained from attacking him since his supporters always accompanied him. On the night of February 13, the assailants followed Yadav, who was alone, on a bike. When the victim reached his house at Sanjeevaiahnagar in Marredpally, Raju shot Yadav. They beat a fast retreat when some locals retaliated and came to the financier's rescue.

Disputes

Inquiries by the Commissioner's Task Force (North) team revealed that the builder had disputes with the victim. Raju had formed a cooperative society and constructed houses for weaker sections. He developed differences with the financier when the latter allegedly occupied some vacant plots belonging to the society. Piecing together these leads, the police zeroed in on the suspects.

Task Force Inspector M. Sreenivasa Rao and Sub-Inspector Ch. Kushalkar were appreciated for their work.
