Elusive birds of Mumbai

Mumbai: The migratory flamingos which come in hordes each year for a winter sojourn have failed to arrive in the Sewri Bay here in their usual numbers, but the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) is still expecting a flutter. Only some 250 flamingos have reached Mumbai's natural preserve since November-December 2006. The BNHS monitors arrivals.

"Those that are here seem happy, normal and comfortable and willing to stay," Sripad Kulkarni of the BNHS said. "We are not giving up hope of more arrivals." The season lasts till .

The BNHS, one of the oldest and largest non-governmental organisations engaged in the preservation and conservation of nature, is trying to figure out the reason. "We are probing the matter," Mr. Kulkarni said. "We don't want to offer any theories or explanations. Nor do we officially want to come to any conclusion yet. And let us not project that this is the end."

A team has gone to the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, one of the main breeding grounds near Mumbai. — PTI
