MAKING A DIFFERENCE: The Lions Club eye hospital in Rekurthi on the outskirts of Karimnagar town
KARIMNAGAR: The Lions Club of Karimnagar Charitable eye hospital located in Rekurthi village on the outskirts of Karimnagar town entered 20 years of relentless service to the rural poor on Tuesday. Set up on February 20, 1988, this hospital, spread over three acres of land provides modern eye care to the rural poor of north Telangana districts comprising Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Warangal and Medak. Bhaskar Madhekhar, the founder chairman of the hospital, took this initiative to provide eye care at an affordable cost. The then Collector R Chandrashekhar Rao had allocated three acres of land to the Lions Club for the hospital. It houses all modern equipment and also has a well-equipped retina department. The hospital had treated about 4.15 lakh out-patients. It has received received eye donations from 3,205 people. The hospital conducts eye camps in villages and schools, identifies patients and treats them. Spectacles are distributed free of cost. Dr. Madhekar said that they would upgrade the retinal department to provide facilities for squint and lid surgeryif philanthropists contributed to the cause. He also said that they were planning to open eye care centres in Manthani, Huzurabad and Basanthnagar of the district.
