Kochiites' gesture, CJI's response

It was with much reservations that the Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan agreed to attend a civic reception accorded to him by Kochiites on Sunday. Judges are not supposed to attend such receptions, he said in his opening remarks, for it could create a lot of problems in their professional career.

However, this one was different. The announcement of a long tenure (of being Chief Justice) had brought in messages from many. There were goodwill messages from those who have lost in my court as well. All those who had worked with him had arrived in the city to wish him well for a career spanning over three years. "I could not ignore all the love that was showered on me. It is just to show them all my love that I took part in this reception," he said.
