Students pick loopholes in cooperative movement

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: "More than 100 years have passed and the cooperative movement still survives. Public support is essential for strengthening the movement," said G.T. Deve Gowda, Minister for Cooperation.

He was speaking after giving away prizes to winners of the State-level essay and debate competition organised by the Karnataka State Cooperative Federation here on Monday.

Mr. Gowda said the participants had highlighted the shortfalls in the movement. He said that information technology training would be provided and the current six-month course (general diploma course) would be upgraded. G. Venkatasubbaiah, writer, said that 25 per cent of the cooperative institutions in the State were making losses.

"We need to identify the loopholes and plug them. I urge the Minister to set up a research and development section, which can revive these sick cooperatives," he said.

Winners

The Minister and the writer gave away the prizes to the winners of the essay and debate competitions. Vidya from V.K.R. Acharya Memorial High School, Udupi, won the first prize in the essay competition.

Vinayak S. Hegde from Vidyodaya Pre-University College, Uttara Kannada, secured the first place in the debate competition for pre-university students.

Tanveer Hassan A.K., student of Maharaja College, Mysore, won the first prize in the debate competition held for degree students while M.S. Kudavakkalagi, student of J.S.S. Shikshana Mahavidyalaya, Bijapur, secured the first place in the competition for post-graduate students.
