THIVUVANANTHAPURAM: Clearance has been given for the first three of the modern rice mills being set up by the Agriculture Department in Kerala with the twin purpose of ensuring reasonable price to paddy cultivators and making available rice at fair price to the consumers. Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Retnakaran said here on Tuesday that they would be set up at Thakazhi in Alappuzha, Vaikkom in Kottayam and Alathur in Palakkad. They were estimated to cost Rs 515.50 lakhs. The Minister stated that with the functioning of these mills it would be possible to check fall in the price of paddy during the harvesting season. These mills could also intervene when the price of rice went up. They could supply rice of better quality than the ones available in the market now to the consumers, he said.
