Congress worker dies

Nagercoil: Sundaramani (65) of Pudukudiyirppu, a Congress activist, died due to heart attack while participating in a `padayatra', flagged off by the Union Minister of Statistics, G.K. Vasan, on Monday to highlight the achievements of the UPA Government.According to police, Sundaramani, who served as the INTUC leader at Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation died at Ozuginaserry near Nagercoil. The police have registered a case and are investigating.

Fatal fall

Tuticorin: Ramalakshmi (63) died after she fell from a motorbike at Puthiampudur near here on Monday.

The police said Ramalakshmi was riding pillion with her son, when the accident happened. She died on the way to the hospital. The police have registered a case against Ayyampandi (25) for driving the bike rashly, which resulted in the death of his mother.

Student relieved of gold chain

Nagercoil: The police are on the look out for three unidentified persons who snatched a gold chain from a college student here on Tuesday.

According to police sources, Shoba (20), of Eravipudhurkadai, a third year student of a college at Nagercoil, was going to the college when a three-member gang snatched the chain from her.

The police have registered a case and are investigating.

Lottery tickets seized, one arrested

Tuticorin: The police have arrested P. Sunderaj (40) on a charge of possessing lottery tickets at Tiruchendur on Monday. A total of 25 tickets were seized from him.

The accused was later remanded to the judicial custody under Section 5 r/w 7 of Lottery Regulation Act. — Staff Reporter

Rally taken out

PERAMBALUR : Students from various schools and colleges took out a rally in the town to create an awareness of Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome on Tuesday.

Carrying placards and raising slogans, they marched from Sangupettai to the old bus stand. The Project Officer of Mahalir Thittam, A. Ramaswamy, flagged off the rally in the presence of the Revenue Divisional Officer, S. Samidas, and other senior officials.

Teachers' demand

TIRUCHI: Members of Tamil Nadu Aided Private Schools Teaching and Non Teaching Staff Association staged a demonstration in the city condemning the attitude of the district educational authorities inkeeping their due benefits such as salary arrears in abeyance.

The association also wanted the earned-leave surrender salary and pension benefits for retired teachers on time, and the monthly salary on the last working day of every month.

Bribe: Man arrested

TIRUCHI: Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption arrested a technical assistant working at the government automobile workshop on Monday on the charge of demanding and obtaining bribe.

DVAC sources said Raju, a government driver, had sent a jeep to the workshop in November for repair. R. Natarajan in charge of repair work had demanded Rs. 300 from Raju to expedite the repair work.

Based on a complaint from Raju, the DVAC registered a case and organised a trap. The sleuths caught Natarajan red-handed when he was accepting the bribe.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The water level in the Mettur Dam on Tuesday stood at 82.25 feet against its full level of 120 feet, on Tuesday.

The inflow was 231 cusecs and the discharge, 1,500 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Grievances day

ERODE: The Erode District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, on Tuesday said that the monthly grievances day meeting for agriculturists would be held on February 23 at 10.30 a.m. at the District Development Council Hall in the Collectorate.

Power shutdown

ERODE: Power supply to the following places will be disrupted on February 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. because of maintenance work at the Kavindapady Sub-station: Kavindapady, Odathurai, Ellispet, Perumthalaiyur, Appakudal, Kolathupalayam, Pethampalayam and Singanallure village.

Multi-media campaign

ERODE: On behalf of the Erode District Information and Public Relation Department, a multi media campaign will be conducted in Erode from March 21 for 10 days, the Collector D. Karthikeyan has said. All the Government departments will display their achievements and details of functioning at the exhibition.

Rs. 27.63 crore for sewerage project

CHENNAI: The State Government on Tuesday sanctioned Rs.27.63 crore for the implementation of a sewerage project in Villupuram municipality.

An official release here said the project was part of the sewerage schemes to be taken up at 18 district headquarters at a total cost of Rs.801.50 crore during 2006-2007, as announced by Minister for Local Administration M.K.Stalin in the Assembly.

In the project to be executed in Villupuram by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, 84.52 km sewer pipes would be laid to collect the sewage. Modern technology would be adopted to treat the sewage. The treated water would be used for irrigation, the release added. — Special Correspondent

CPI(M) to stage demonstrations

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will stage demonstrations in front of offices of the Union Government in district and taluk headquarters all over the State on February 26 to urge the Centre to control the rising prices of essential commodities. This is part of the nationwide campaign of the party. — Special Correspondent

Bomb hoax in school

ERODE: An anonymous telephone call stating that a bomb will explode at a matriculation school in Moolapalayam area here turned out to be a hoax on Tuesday.

The school's watchman received the call stating that the bomb would go off at 11 a.m. He immediately informed the school principal, who complained to the police.

Police, along with a sniffer dog and bomb disposal squad, made a thorough search in all the classrooms.

A holiday was declared to the school following the incident. — Staff Reporter

`Celebrate birthday in a simple manner'

CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa has urged her party members to celebrate her birthday [falling on February 24, as per the English almanac] in a simple manner.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, she advised the party members to arrange community feast and help to the poor. At all the layers, the party should function from its own premises within a year, Ms Jayalalithaa added. — Special Correspondent

Department of legal studies retransferred

CHENNAI: The post-graduate Department of Legal Studies, which was transferred from the University of Madras to the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University, has been retransferred to the Madras University with effect from Monday, according to a government gazette extraordinary notification. — Special Correspondent
