Next phase of scheme for unemployed to be launched

CHENNAI:
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will launch the second phase of the scheme to assist 2.5 lakh educated unemployed in the State on February 24.
An official release here said on Tuesday that Mr.Karunanidhi would hand over financial assistance to the beneficiaries at a function in Coimbatore. Ministers would disburse the assistance in districts on February 25.
The scheme, inaugurated by Mr. Karunanidhi in Tiruchi on November 11 last year, covered 1.88-lakh educated youth in the first phase. It was implemented to fulfil an election promise made by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
The break-up
It was announced in the budget for 2006-2007 that monthly assistance would given for three years at the rate of Rs.150 for those who had passed the school final examination, Rs.200 for those who had cleared higher secondary or pre-university course and Rs.300 for graduates and postgraduates.
The assistance was being extended to the unemployed even after completion of five years from the date of registration in the employment exchange, it said.
