CHENNAI: Chennai Port Trust, with its water front area extending to 420 acres, had only limited information about destruction of the explosives-laden boat. A senior official of the International Ship and Port Security code-compliant port said on Tuesday morning the boat was towed by a police launcher and handed over to the Coast Guard. He said the explosion neither posed any marine pollution hazard nor violated the ISPS norms. On the marine pollution management programme in the port, he said the Coast Guard was in-charge with regard to its implementation. Range of cargoes A major gateway for export and import on the east coast Chennai Port Trust handled a range of cargoes from the highly hazardous petroleum products, to dusty cargo such as coal and iron ore, and high value containers and cars. It also handled clean cargo, including foodgrains, steel coils and granite.
Value of cargo
Another official said while it was difficult to estimate the value of the cargo, the daily revenue of the port, accruing from the various charges it levied on the users, was in the range of Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 2 crore. At least 15 vessels are berthed on an average at the port daily.
