Jayalalithaa's charge against Centre
|
CHENNAI:
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Monday alleged a conspiracy behind the Centre's move to dismiss the Mulayam Singh Government and impose President's rule in Uttar Pradesh.
In a statement here, she said the tenure of President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam would end in July 2007.
Presidential
election
The Congress would like to have its nominee elected as the new President who would be "pliable," unlike Dr. Kalam, who had shown, on many occasions, that he had a mind of his own.
The Congress feared that if parties opposed to it got together and put up a candidate for the President's election, the going might be tough for the Congress-led UPA nominee.
So it was trying to reduce the strength of the Opposition parties in the electoral college for presidential election.
Plea to EC, judiciary
Ms.Jayalalithaa urged the Election Commission and the judiciary to intervene and render justice to preserve democracy in India.
