Kochi to host world maritime meeting

Staff Reporter

INA-PIANC is scheduled to be held from April 16 to 19

KOCHI: Kochi and its all-weather port are set to improve their visibility on the world of maritime business with the Annual General Assembly of the International Navigation Association-Permanent International Association for Navigation Congress (INA-PIANC) scheduled to be held here from April 16 to 19.

The navigation association is a global non-profit technical and scientific organisation dealing with inland and maritime navigation and has private members and representatives from corporations and national governments on it. India is a permanent member-country.

Kochi has been chosen as the venue for the general assembly because of its position in the maritime world. "And the destination is uniquely perfect for the PIANC Annual General Assembly. Cochin, the Queen of the Arabian Sea, has been the gateway to travellers and traders from far and near for centuries," says information posted on the association website announcing the general assembly.

It goes on to describe Kochi and its people: "The ethereal charm of this land, its hospitable people, mystical legends and glorious culture only add on to the beauty of Cochin."

A meeting, attended by Cochin Port Trust chairman N. Ramachandran was held in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the conduct of the assembly.

As one of the world's premier forums on navigation, waterways and related fields, the general assembly will bring entrepreneurs, engineers, planners and researchers in the navigation industry to Kochi for the three-day technical sections that have scope ranging from technological advances and emerging environmental issues to a review of policy and planning experiences.

PIANC was founded in 1885 with the objective of fostering progress in planning, design, construction, improvement, maintenance and operation of inland and maritime waterways and ports of coastal areas. It also promotes facilities for fisheries, sports and recreational navigation.
