KOLLAM: A false alarm that a tusker at a temple festival had run amok led to a stampede in which more than 30 persons were injured. The incident took place late on Tuesday evening within the precincts of Thurayilkunnu Sri Subramanya Swamy Temple, near Karunagapally. The temple precincts were crowded as it was the final day of the annual festival. Four of those injured are in a serious condition. They have admitted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Twenty-eight persons have been admitted to Karunagapally taluk hospital. Eyewitnesses said a person had pulled the tail of the elephant, which retaliated but did not run amok. Those nearby thought the elephant had lost it cool and they fled. Others too followed suit, resulting in the stampede.
